Reiki - the Usui Shiki Ryoho System

Stub your toe or bang your head and most likely your first response is to place your hand on the sore spot, to soothe the pain. This is a basic instinct - as everyone has a healing energy centre in the palm of each hand. This basic gift of healing energy can be enhanced by learning Reiki.

Reiki does not tie into any particular religion – people of all belief systems use Reiki. The word Reiki, literally translated, means “Universal Life Force”, and combines the utilisation of the life force (Ki) - that is present in all living things - with the warmth, reassurance and healing power of human touch.

Janice has been working with Reiki since early 1994 and was initiated as a Maser in 1999.

Reiki 1 – The first degree of energy enhancement - the starting point. Taught during a two day seminar with a series of four initiations. Primarily for the self, family and pets.

Reiki 11 – This is the practitioner level. It passes on three Sacred Symbols that enable the person to access and focus Reiki in a more powerful way and to use Reiki for distant and absent healing, as well as for emotional healing.  One initiation is given at this level.

Master/Practitioner training is available to Reiki Second Degree practitioners, who have a deep commitment to Reiki, who do not want to teach but want to enhance their healing energy by using the ancient and Sacred Master Symbols.  This is taught in a full day workshop.  Please note - This is NOT part of the Usui system, and other than the Usui symbols are taught.

Master/Teacher enables graduates to teach and lead others. The apprenticeship is usually for a period of up to 3 years. During the period of training, apprentices learn how to teach Reiki to others, how to lead a small group, and how to initiate people to the beautiful energy.  There is also quite a lot of inner work involved.

Ongoing training:

Janice is committed to ongoing training, and has attended Master Retreats with Phyllis Lei Furumoto, the Grand Master of the Usui Shiki Ryoho system.  This is a photo of Janice with Phyllis at a Master Circle event in Queensland, November, 2009.

Janice is a member of Reiki Australia, a professional organisation concerned with professional standards and accreditation.

A Reiki treatment takes approximately one to one and a half hours. The client does not need to take off any clothing other than their shoes, heavy jackets and belts. The Reiki practitioner knows intuitively where to place his/her hands to allow a beautiful soothing and gentle energy to flow to the client. Reiki practitioners do not claim to cure any illnesses, but by having a Reiki treatment a deep sense of inner peace and balance can be achieved which can enhance the natural healing of the body, soul and mind.  A course of three to four  Reiki treatments often bring issues to the surface and highlights factors surrounding the illness, which can then assist the client to understand and clear the blockages that caused the illness/dis-ease in the first place.

When to learn:

Children from the age of approximately eight years old can learn Reiki - in fact children are natural and intuitive hands-on healers as they don't have the blockages that many adults seem to have.  The oldest participant who has joined one of Janice's classes, was a radiant 78 year old who practiced Reiki on her family and friends - she even had some clients.

So age is no barrier - the beautiful life force energy is there for us to use at whatever age we feel the need to explore this beautiful energy.   Just see Janice's youngest grandson, Deacon (three years old at the time) giving a Reiki to his big brother, Cody

Research Article
Dear Members
Trial demonstrates Reiki benefits health and mood of students

This 2010 study was conducted by Deborah Bowden, Lorna Goddard and John Gruzelier of the Psychology Department, University of London.

The research article “A randomised Controlled Single Blind Trial of the Efficacy of Reiki at Benefiting Mood and Well–Being” appeared in the journal “Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine” last year.

At a time when the clinical efficacy of Reiki is being challenged, it is a very worthwhile exercise for each of us to keep abreast of research in support of the benefits of Reiki. Reiki Australia is currently focusing attention on gathering more quality research papers and making them available to you on our website.

You can learn more about this trial and read the full article by visiting the Practitioner Issues and Resources page
